Putin signed the ‘annexation’ of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in an illegitimate move with severe repercussions for the international community.
As some analysts consider a possible strike from Zaporhzhia to cut off Russian supply lines, Putin’s move to take control of the power plant entrenched Russia’s position in the dangerous region, establishing the power plant as a potential point of contention. Should Ukraine begin a counter-attack in the region, and Russia uses the power plant as an artillery base, the situation could spiral quickly out of control.
Zaporizhzhia NPP has a single electricity line remaining to supply energy from Ukraine, sources say. Recently, fires and shutdowns have occurred at an alarming rate, and the IAEA has expressed deep concern with the ongoing Russian military presence inside the power plant.
