A large-scale offensive northeast of Kherson has begun, with Ukrainian forces advancing deep into Russian-held territory and liberating several villages. Already, Russians are raising the alarm over Nova Kakhovka and reportedly attempting to establish a defensive line in front of the town.
Not only does control over Nova Kakhovka allow Ukrainian forces to continue their advances on the road to Kherson, but the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Powerplant also ensures the supply of fresh water to Crimea.
Additionally, any structural disruptions on the dam could create a flood, causing devastation in Kherson and washing away any pontoon bridges along the Dnieper. Ukraine is unlikely to do so given its intention of securing Kherson city intact, but Russia could attempt an attack on the dam should Ukraine begin attempting river-crossings after liberating the western portions of the region.
