Russian proxies have released their referendum results, with highly dubious results unrecognized by much of the international community.
Region | In favor of annexation | Voter turnout |
Donetsk | 99.23% | 97.15% |
Luhansk | 98.42% | 94.15% |
Kherson | 87.05% | 76.86% |
Zaporizhzhia | 93.11% | 85.4% |
The validity of the referendums has been questioned, given that much of the populace was forced out of their homes due to the invasion or shuttled into filtration camps in Russia. Additionally, there are reports of violence and intimidation by Russian soldiers on Ukrainian citizens, compelling them to vote for Russia. Videos from ‘polling stations’ saw ballot counters not even attempting to count votes accurately, many of which were empty.
The ongoing counteroffensive in Kharkiv, moving in the direction of Donetsk, continues to threaten the already frayed credibility of the referendums. Ultimately, Russia’s recognition of occupied territories as Russian soil may prove disastrous, given Ukraine and the wider world’s refusal to consider annexed territories as a red line.
