Russo-Ukrainian War 9/2/22

IAEA officials will remain at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest power plant in Europe, currently under occupation by Russian forces near Enerhodar.

A fierce artillery duel between both Russia and Ukraine has caused grave concern amongst the international community, particularly amidst the growing energy crisis likely to have serious effects on Europe this winter.

Though Russia has claimed indiscriminate Ukrainian attacks on the facility, Ukrainian footage depicts the use of small explosives using drones on the periphery of the power plant, selecting targets carefully and not using second strikes even in opportune moments.

Though Zaporizhzhia NPP is far more stable than Chornobyl, the risk of a catastrophe remains amidst the militarization of the region, particularly as the war would hamper efforts to respond properly to a disaster.
